Learning Seminars
10-24-12
3-D imaging. Learned photographic techniques inside the media lab to produce 3-d effects. We used stereoscopy to create a digital 3-d image. We took photographs of an image from two slightly different angles and superimposed them to create a final three dimensional product.
Innovation and Irrationality. Learned about motivation and how research shows how irrational it can be. We were introduced to a number of books that the presenter had read on a variety of topics. These included the works of Dan Pink and Malcolm Gladwell. The discussion about motivation was particularly interesting. This compared and contrasted the usage of extrinsic vs. intrinsic rewards as forms of motivation inside and outside of the classroom.
11-14-12
PBL Structures. We learned about a wide variety of project based learning structures including: critique, modeling, and exhibition. The importance of maintaining structure while incorporating project based learning is critical in the success of student facilitation and learning. One
Tech Talk #2. How to use technology, such as student i phone usage for polling or socratic seminars, to augment teaching in the classroom.
1-16-13
Collaborative Problem Solving. We viewed many different types of collaboration throughout many grade levels and learned that there is a wide variety of collaborative tools available.
Movie Making. We had to make a short video in a very limited time frame, edit, and show it to the class. Through this process we learned about making movies.

Mentor Observations
Teacher and External Observations
Mentee Observation of Mentor.
External Observation. I traveled, along with several other HTHNC teachers to Chula Vista HTH. We spent the day observing other teachers and looking for any manner of creativity and inspiration that we could bring back to our campus. For example, Chula Vista HTH does a fantastic job with the curation of student work. It was quite inspiring to see how much student created product is proudly displayed on their walls and in their halls. It made me more thoughtful about including the curation aspect of PBL and writing it into the project descriptions. Furthermore, we saw many great teachers in their own habitats and this was also quite inspiring. I saw some great examples of tool and material storage; creative use of classroom spaces, and some incredible instructional and teaching techniques. It was also quite great to spend some time in the elementary school since our campus did not have grades K-5 at that time.
