STEP ONE: identify the PROBLEM- up to 95% of the waste found in the garbage cans located in our school's lunch area COULD easily be diverted from the LANDFILL by RECYCLING and COMPOSTING. Sadly, all of these items are just haphazardly tossed into the trashcan and are destined for the landfill.

CONCLUSION: At least 75% of waste in the garbage could have been RECYCLED or COMPOSTED.
SORTING TABLE PROTOTYPES: Most (95%+) of all trash found in the lunch area garbage cans could have been recycled or composted. The students who use the lunch are, quite simply, are not separating their trash. We need to design a system that is functional, fashionable and user-friendly.
