Humans, especially in the United States are particularly bad at separating their detritus. In order to move towards achieving zero landfill status in our own classroom we designed and constructed sorting tables to assist us in this task. By being mindful of the waste we, usually, toss out without much thought we hope to eradicate items designated for the landfill. Through research, precycling, and creating alternatives for disposable items we can reach handily and stylishly reach our goal. Find below a whole bunch of photographs documenting our creative process! We ultimately built three different models for use in our school. It is our hope that the habits of mindfulness cultivated by our students will be carried out into the greater society and disseminated to the population at large. In fact, I have had several parents communicate directly to me that their offspring had become overtly critical of their waste disposal habits. This news, of course, brought me much joy!
